Bishkek, Sept. 12 / Kabar /. President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev today met with Prime Minister Sapar Isakov, the Kyrgyz President's press service reported.
During the meeting, the head of government informed the president about the results of the negotiation process with Centerra Gold Inc. and the signed Strategic Agreement for the Protection of the Environment and Development of Investments.
Isakov said that as a result of negotiations between the Kyrgyz Government and Centerra Gold Inc., conditions are being created to improve the environmental situation of the Kumtor project and agreements have been reached to resolve environmental disputes.
"Direct and indirect economic benefits for Kyrgyzstan from entering into a new agreement may amount to about $ 200 million," the prime minister said.
Noting the special importance of protecting national interests in the Kumtor project, Atambayev stressed that the results of the talks indicate a mutual desire to improve compliance with environmental standards at Kumtor.
"The government must ensure that Kumtor must not be the subject of dirty political games and a factor of destabilization, but became a purely economic project, effectively working in the interests of the state and its citizens," the president said.
